Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet School Addition + Renovation

This commission entailed the renovations and additions to the historic former Pearl High School, which played a pivotal historical role in the education of the African American community in Nashville from 1936-1983. The commission included the comprehensive renovation of this historic multi-building campus and contextual additions to the west end of the existing buildings. The addition included offices, library, an Internet cafe, multiple classrooms, orchestra spaces, as well as conference spaces and new circulation system connecting the buildings. Renovations included the conversation of the historic vocational shop into the primary dining hall, an update to the historic auditorium, as well as complete renovation of each historic classroom. The project is designed to seamlessly and appropriately blend into the historic context, while also distinguishing itself as part of the present.
